Movie Review Revisited: The Great Discovery (2008)

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND NOT FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FAN BASE

THE GREAT DISCOVERY
Written by
Sharon Miller

Directed by
Steve Asquith

Produced by
Simon Spencer

Release Date
9/9/08 (US)
6/10/08 (UK)

PLOT
The old town of Great Waterton had been discovered by Thomas, it was all abandoned and ruined as it's been lost for so many years. So they rebuild it in time for Sodor Day. Meanwhile a new engine named Stanley arrived to do Thomas' work, however Stanley was being quite the popular ones with the other engines.

MY VIEWS
The last special to be using full live action models due to taxation in the UK for animation, the same was said for Aardmann back in 2012, but the UK government manage to stop them to move overseas due to cheaper taxation in America. The same could've been done to Thomas, as well as HIT's other character brands, but at the time, 2007, no one had done such thing and so Thomas was sent to Canada for the CGI switch due to lower taxes over there. So this movie was a great closure towards a great era. Originally Gwyneth Paltrow, Hollywood actor in such films like Disney/Marvel's 'Iron Man' series, was going to be the narrator thus making her the first female storyteller for the series, according to former script executive, Sam Barlow. Though in my opinion, it would've made the special go for 'Magic Railroad syndrome', no offence to Americans, but Americanisation of Thomas the Tank Engine to me is not right, if they were to get a British actress in Hollywood standards, it should go to Helena Bonham Carter.

To me this special is better then 'Calling All Engines!', the morals in it are about friendships and you should never be jealous over someone. The sets are amazing, I really do love the set of Great Waterton being lost and abandoned, a credit to the people behind the scenes they deserve much appreciation.

Stanley, the new character introduced in the special, is one of Sharon Miller/Sam Barlow's most likeable characters, along with Hiro, Victor, Kevin, Belle and Luke. It's also interesting to note that Stanley is a hybrid of a Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST and Kitson's No. 5459 'Austin I'. To me he's likeable for his positive attitude and good sense of fun.

There are some flaws in the film that I find to be a bit critical and one of them would have to be the narrow gauge engines, there scene in particular of the Thin Controller saying 'You will be very busy today!' and yet they've served no purpose and that this scene (above) is entirely pointless, I guess you can imply they were busy off screen bringing material and all but they've served no purpose and there are no narrow gauge track at Great Waterton.

Another criticism I have with the special is Peirce Brosnan, when I first reviewed the movie I thought he sounds good, but after seeing it again since 2013, I still remember parts of the movie of course, I got bored of his narration. There are times were he shows some enthusiasm but in other parts he sounds bland and boring. I can tell he's a good actor and of course he was doing a good job but his narration gets boring in the end. The reason they've done Brosnan was to give Thomas an international voice but it didn't work out well in the end, which was refereed by Sam Barlow, and so I believe that's why they've brought back Angelis and Brandon for S12.

It's also great too the amount of characters that were used too, either they have a cameo, minor or big role. The songs were nice and catchy too and this was the last time that the children choir were used for Thomas songs and to be honest I think it's a good idea to finish them. There singing was getting bland and their enthusiasm was growing weak and I believe some of them can't even sing. So bringing in the idea of an adult singer from here to the CGI era is a much better idea, I believe for adults to enjoy too? 'Thomas You're The Leader' is a catchy song but looking back at it, the lyrics make it sound like an extended rap version of 'Engine Roll Call', not that I'm saying its bad but it feels extensive.

In the end it's a good special to bring a great era to an end. I've said it before though that by this time the models and sets were getting to be a bit of a bore and repetitive as well with the camera angles too, yes Nitrogen Studios did the same but the models did as well. I've enjoyed the special though and it was my number one favorite. But I mustn't say anymore I will spoil it.

Movie Review Revisited: Calling All Engines! (2005)

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND NOT FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FAN BASE

CALLING ALL ENGINES!
Written by
Paul Larson
Abi Grant

Produced by
Simon Spencer

Directed by
Steve Asquith

Release Date
September 6th, 2005 (US)
October 3rd, 2005 (UK)

PLOT
Summer arrived and the engines are busy taking holidaymakers, vacationers in the US, around the Island of Sodor. A new airport is to be built but the steam engines and diesel engines were having a conflict with each other on who is better. However a hurricane came to Sodor and had damaged many things, will the airport be ready in time?

MY VIEWS
The DVD special was…OK. It's not the best of Thomas specials but it was decent and in my opinion it has been well over looked by the other specials that it's almost forgettable. This is where, I think the whole steam vs. diesel plot was starting to be overused to make the story go.
The special though feels like it would've been worked as a Thomas episode, and it feels like an extension of one. Probably the pointless thing in the special was the interval actives, of course it's for children to learn as the show is focused towards a pre-school audience but it just drags the story on and on and they were completely obvious that a child would know which is the right answer as soon as they see the correct hill.
There has been character returns such as Daisy, Diesel 10 and Lady. Though I wonder why they brought back Daisy just so they could use her to be a rival against the steam engines. That's very out of her character, she's very boastful about how modern she looks but in the end respects the steam engines and has been good friends with them ever since. Do the people behind the scenes have ever research this stuff, Steve Asquith had worked on the show for 21 years at the time this was in production and he was the director, you think maybe he had known about Daisy's character? This in no way of taking the mickey out of Asquith, he is a good director after David Mitton.

There has been many fans complaining that Diesel 10's character trait has been messed up making him all nice and kind and helpful by the third act of the film. However I do see him more as a 'tough guy' of the railway rather then an evil diesel but he wants to be useful like the others, yeah it's out of character but I think the new persona is much more better then his Hollywood persona.

However when it comes to Lady, her presence in the special was just pointless, it could've been any engine with a nice persona. However I like that they've retcon Lady rather then making her living in a mountain somewhere in America they said that she's a special engine working in the mountains but it is still pointless. However I was surprised that Rusty's season four model was used rather his S5-12 face, I don't mind the big face though but in my opinion I hate it when some fans have a fury over the size of his face, yes it's nothing like how the Rev.W.Awdry made it but they've blamed HIT for it rather then Britt Allcroft, not that I have anything against her nor I'm saying that they should hate Britt Allcroft, as the face was made during her time in the series.

In the end it's an OK special, not fantastic and it was simple, good enough for the kids to understand, it has a good moral about everyone being different but being the same at one thing and that is being really useful. However compare it to TATMRR, it's ten times more better.

Movie Review Revisited: Thomas & The Magic Railroad (2000)

First off apologies for the lack of updates, I was going to review the UK's S15 DVD but decided against it due to the fact that my opinions on the infamous series hasn't changed since writing my views on it in 2012 and that the stupid Sharon Miller hate is getting old and unpleasant. Yes she is not a great writer but she doesn't deserve harsh judgement like her going to hell, that's just ignorant. She's not a bad person from what I've heard.

I've decided to update my views on the Thomas specials from Thomas and the Magic Railroad - Blue Mountain Mystery that I've done from 2012. My opinions may or may not've been changed during the past two years since those reviews though. But here are my 'Movie Review Revisited' and the first instalment is the infamous first, but first here's this warning:

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND NOT FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FAN BASE

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT MY VIEWS OF THIS MOVIE IS NOT TO OFFENED AMERICAN OR CANADIANS. AS A FAN OF THE BRITISH VERSION, PLEASE UNDERSTAND MY VIEWS.

THOMAS & THE MAGIC RAILROAD (2000)

Britt Allcroft

Produced by
Britt Allcroft

Alec Baldwin
Peter Fonda
Mara Wilson

Music

Gullane Entertainment/Destination Films

Released
July 14th, 2000 (UK)
July 26th, 2000 (US)
December 14th 2000 (AUS)

It was the year 2000, the world had entered the 21st century, the city of Sydney, Australia was hosting the Olympic games and Thomas the Tank Engine was given his first theatrical movie and in the end…was a total dud.

PLOT
Diesel 10 returns to the Island of Sodor to find a lost steam engine. Meanwhile Mr. Conductor, from Shining Time Station was looking after the Fat Controller's railway while away on holiday and had lost his gold dust. Burnett Stone felt down that Lady, the lost engine, never got to work again and had lost his wife, childhood friend Tasha. Meanwhile Thomas helps Mr. Conductor, Lily and Lady during the film with his lack of screen time.

MY VIEWS
If there are people or parents giving me the 'It's a kids movie' card that is no excuse for how terrible this film or any other terrible children's film there is. That is like saying 'Batman and Robin' is a movie for adults despite the harsh criticism it had gotten since its release and to this day it is still hated by fans, critics and most of the general audience. If a movie is bad it's going to get some criticism its how the way things improve over the years.

Now on with the movie:

There are many plot holes in this movie that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. First off is the 'magic portal' between Muffle Mountain and the Island of Sodor which is known as the Magic Railroad and that the power of gold dust gives the railroad its energy. But if Lady is not there providing the power the magic linking to both worlds will vanish and yet Sodor is all fine and dandy with the engines talking and doing their work like normal while the magic was fading away, possibly when Lily arrived at Shining Time.

Plus there are unexplained parts of the movie, particularly around the third act. How did Lady and Thomas get to the Magic Railroad, despite that the entrance was on a cliff and how did Thomas, while racing down Muffle Mountain went under another magic portal under a hill? Even to this day for 14 years I have no idea why that was made. But this just another unexplained plot hole that we have to deal with. I the 1999 script, the draft version of the movie or better known as the 'director's cut' script, the Magic Railroad has various portals, which is a railway system, and I would love to see that. But it's still a stupid idea to put that in the final version without any form of explanation whatsoever.

The whole magic concept in the movie was ridiculous and this is from Britt Allcroft, the woman who many fans have praised over the years for adapting the Rev.W.Awdry's stories onto the television screen 30 years ago and usually in the fan base you hear many criticising HIT Entertainment for the flaws they've done since 2004 and yet Britt Allcroft had made mistakes herself with Series 5 being over the top with constant crashes, which resulted to a psychologist in the UK stating that the show showing constant crashes will lead kids to be scared to go on a train, and this movie. I respect the woman and I understand that she thinks the show feels like magic but if you're going to make a movie about a vicar's fictional engine that has been well known since 1946 at least show some respect to his work by making Sodor a fictional island in the British isles rather then a universal world were magic is the key for its existence.

At least the characterisation of the Awdry characters (Thomas, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy and Toby, Annie, Clarabel, Bertie and Harold) haven't been tampered with as of course Britt Allcroft understands the characters well as producer. But the new characters such as Lady, Diesel 10, Splatter and Dodge were bland, lacking personality and have no reason why to be on Sodor barring Lady for the latter as she provides the magic between the two worlds. Starting off with Lady, she is bland and has no personality at all in the movie. All we know from the movie is that she's magical and that is it. Plus her choice of basis is nowhere near a real engine yes Thomas is a fictional show but it always have a tradition to this day that they base the character from a real life steam locomotive.

Diesel 10 has improved much better in S17 and looking back at the movie, he was a typical Hollywood villain. An evil engine wanting to destroy Lady and dominate the Sodor steam engines….for absolutely no reason! Maybe power? But why has he returned to the island? We never seen him in the past episodes prior the movie. In the director's cut though he came to help the engines, why did they change that after the test screening audience I don't know. There is one movie to me that showcases that you don't need a villain to make a kids movie and that is Hayao Miyazaki's 'My Neighbour Totoro' a simple film about two little girls befriending a creature named Totoro that they only see at a young age. Now if Totoro's plot is used for a Thomas film I would like to see that. It was pointless of D10 though to be taken away in disgrace when he's was coming back to the series, though I will say him the 17th season they've treated him more as a three dimensional character showing us that he doesn't want to be left out (watch 'The Missing Christmas Decorations')

Splatter and Dodge are your typical Hollywood goofy comic-relief sidekicks that work for the bad guy. In the final print that we know today they were shown out of nowhere with no explanation or reason why they're in the movie. However in the directors cut they were working in the scrap yards, though I wonder they could've used 'Arry and Bert and introduce them in the movie, it's been rumoured over the years that their basis was used for 'Arry and Bert for the fifth season. Though when the models pictures were released at the time, when they were selling the ERTL models, their models have the detailing of grim around them to make them look more realistic in my eyes but the way they were in the movie makes them look bland. Their personality seems OK but they weren't important to the movie and they hardly done anything, in the final print whereas in the DC they actually do something after George told them to ram the magic buffers themselves leading them to be derailed.

Note: These people were suppose to be the voice actors for the characters.

Another problem with the film is the voice actors. Thomas the Tank Engine is a British brand and yet the movie has actors who are, no offence, American and Canadians, which led to British movie critics to tag 'Americanisation' of Thomas the Tank Engine. There is only one VA who was from England and that is Britt Allcroft, which I have to say she did fine despite the lack of dialogue, she only had four lines throughout the movie. Originally she never had a speaking role and she only responds telepathically to Thomas, which explains her whistling in the final print when Burnett Stone was reading a book at his cottage and when Lily came to see him.

For Thomas, John Bellis, a fireman and part time taxi driver in the Isle of Man was given the role due to his voice as Britt Allcroft thinks that how she thinks of Thomas' voice. This was suppose to be big break but unfortunately was suffered through the test audiences in L.A, California because he sounds 'too old'. Yet Thomas the Tank Engine has been narrated by many people who were in 40's - 60's in the UK and US such as Ringo Starr, Michael Angelis, George Carlin and Alec Baldwin at the time and was replaced by Canadian voice Eddie Glenn giving Thomas a more youthful voice.

The same can be said about Michael Angelis, the long term UK narrator of the show from 1991 - 2012, was to voice James and Percy. This would've been his debut towards the American audience until 2004 but he too was casted aside by the L.A test audience with the 'sound too old' card. A shame to hear that as he had such great enthusiasm then. He was replaced by Linda Ballantyne for Percy and Susan Roman for James, I notice that one person, who shall remain nameless, was critical about James being voiced by a woman. The reason why there are female voice actors who voice male character is because there voices have a different pitch then men thus in the end create a more convincing voice for the male character. There are many talented female VA's like Nancy Cartwright who voiced Bart Simpson in The Simpsons, Veronica Taylor who've voiced Ash Ketchum from Pokemon from 1998 - 2006, where they've replaced them with cheaper voice actors and E.G Daily who've voiced Tommy Pickles in Rugrats and its spin off All Grown Up.

I have no personal hatred for the VA's that were chosen in the final cut of the film but I think the people behind the film would think of hiring some British voice actors rather then having someone impersonating a British accent. There is one VA that I ended up liking which is Neil Crone, despite that he gave Diesel 10 an American accent and Splatter and Dodge goofy sidekick voices and Gordon, well he did alright for him but I would've considered a British person doing the voice.

Another big problem with the movie is that the humans have more screen time then the engines, as Doug Walker, Nostalgia Critic says, 'You know what's seriously lacking in Thomas the Tank Engine? Yes Thomas the Tank Engine! He's barely in this!' and I agree, though the actors are good but I would have to agree on Peter Fonda's over depressing acting and I know that many kids films manage to have sad scenes but it's a bit depressing. Alec Baldwin was decent though and same can go to Mara Wilson. But if it's a Thomas movie you're making, with him having more poster space:

The theatrical poster, the one on the top is the teaser poster

You are bound to know he was going to have a bigger role. In the original script yes the engines were going to have more screen time then the humans, but with so many cuts and revisions made, it seriously lacked that. In the end it's a terrible movie and it's one of those movies that you see on lists of movies that are adapted from a TV show that shouldn't have been made. It is definitely one of the worst films I've seen and it's easily 'Shining Time Station' the movie disguised as a Thomas film. How the way I think the movie would've gone is that they should take out the Shining Time Station stuff and replace with some of it as some from Sodor. You can still have D10 helping out the engines, you can have Burnett Stone being on Sodor up in the mountains of say Culdee Fell, you don't need the Mountain Railway Engines though and instead of a magic engine you can have an old engine, maybe as old as Edward. I know there are fans of the movie and that is fine but in my opinion this the worst Thomas movie I've seen and I'm not lying but 'Misty Island Rescue' is more realistic compare to this, even if that one wasn't good as well. There are some good things that've came out from the movie and that was the models, the Magic Railroad background I have to admit was beautiful, though I prefer this one by Oleg Savytski, and the music. I liked it as a kid to see the models on the big screen for the first time and it still amazing to look at and I liked the soundtrack that was made in the movie too. But it's final draft was written and edited terribly that to me is an abomination towards the history of Thomas and it was a box office flop.

There is a lot of information about the director's cut of this movie and the movie in general by SiF that have been compiled by various members since 2007, click here and you'll be surprised by the many things that went behind the scenes.

NWR Editorial: Logan

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND NOT FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FAN BASE

NWR EDITORIAL: LOGAN

On July 8th 2014, HIT Entertainment and Mattel have released a brand new character named Logan, which will be exclusively sold in a playlet that comes with a free book, which that'll be his only appearance and not on the television screen. Looking at the character design of Logan I'm surprised that an a American toy company had gone with a British prototype, which he's a 0-4-0 Sentinel steam shunter so that's good mark for Mattel but how the way it was drawn looks a bit bland, plus no front coupling either. But the face in my opinion is…ugly. It looks like a plastic surgery that had gone wrong, it looks like a jacked up Victor.

Another critical opinion I have about this character is how the way he was hyped up to be. He was shown on the 'Engine Depot' page on the official Thomas & Friends website and was hyped up as a new character on a page with characters that have appeared in movies and episodes of the series. Why couldn't HIT and Mattel make a wooden railway character guide on a wooden railway website? They could've confused not only fans but parents and the target range too to be on a page with TV characters.

Mattel have said in their Press Release a few months ago that they be making wooden railway exclusive characters but how the way Logan was hyped up to be, some had been fallen that he'll be a new character for the television series. I think Mattel should try and open up a new website to promote the wooden railway range with their exclusive characters there and not on the official Thomas & Friends website.

NWR Editorial: Trackmaster 2014's Design Change (UPDATED 16/07/14)

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND NOT FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FAN BASE

NWR EDITORIAL:
TRACKMASTER'S 2014 DESIGN CHANGE

Trackmaster has been going on in the market since 2008 replacing the Tomy battery train sets, which are still going strong in Japan to this, known as Plarail. In 2014 HIT Entertainment and Fisher Price have recently released new design changes to their Trackmaster range, replacing the bland brown track with grey and flimsy looking grey track and squashed up engines and rolling stock.

I'm no fan of Trackmaster toys, I don't collect battery toys anymore, but on occasions I do, which is Plarail from Japan and no I have no big collection. However just going by how fans complain about the new format there's an option you can either give up on the new set and complain about it or realistically take the time to get use to the new changes. I don't have a good memory but I believe there were some fans out there in the Thomas community who complained about the older Trackmaster toys replacing the old Tomy sets, despite that they can fit on blue track unlike the new ones.

Now there's a petition going around the internet, I'm not going to give a link for it, to have the old designs back of the toy. To me they are just toys designed for the prime target of Thomas the Tank Engine, young children. To me the petition is worthless and I know they'll be some saying 'But who's going to care about the DVD petition?!' yes they're just DVDs but there is come good coming out of it. If HIT and Universal listen to the fans, parents wouldn't have to be worried about buying an amount of Thomas DVDs that has episodes that they've never seen before and avoid them for buying some DVDs overseas. A petition to change the design of toys just because some fans aren't used to change is worthless. Yes it cost money, the toys and sets, but if a petition to change towards the old design happened then it's still going to cost money. I'm not insulting fans of the Trackmaster range but sometimes fans need to either give up on the range and move on to something else or take the time to get use to it and there could be some good coming out of it. If you don't like the new changes in the range then just don't buy them.

There are some poorly designed toys from pre-2014 Trackmaster as well, such as the Light up Thomas:

Some parents have criticised about the earlier Trackmaster sets being too difficult to deal with and that some trains don't work well. In the end not everything is perfect and that's all I have to say. If I've offended some fans of Trackmaster, I apologise.

US DVD Complete Series Petition

Since 2004, America was given 'The Early Years' on DVD all restored for the first time, but with the UK narration of Ringo Starr and not with the American narration of George Carlin, who had recorded all episodes of Thomas & Friends for four seasons. After the release of the DVD there were no follow up and the UK and Australia were given series compilation DVDs since 1998 in the UK and 2006 in Australia, though S13-14 have yet to be released in Australia. The only way America were given classic episodes, and new series episodes too, all remastered was in compilation DVDs of various episodes such as 'Engine Friends' from 2012. The United States have classic series DVDs, but only with various episodes on such titles like 'Thomas and His Friends Help Out and other Stories' or 'James Learns a Lesson and Other Stories' or '10 Years of Thomas the Tank Engine' etc. and, with Lionsgate and Anchor Bay, the episodes were from VHS transfers and have such low quality. Plus episodes between S6-17 (Prior to 'Spills and Thrills') have been released in full screen rather then widescreen and every episode in the UK of those series have been released widescreen. Now with Universal being the new distributor of Thomas DVDs starting October this year, fans who've started the petition such as TheUnknownThomasFan1, TheFattHatt1943 and Tug97 have set one up on change.org persuading HIT and Universal to give the United States all series compilation episodes of one of Britain's beloved children's characters. Old fans can look back at their childhoods and younger fans will experience what Thomas was like in the past, most people today would share the experience as young fans' parents have grew up with Thomas as well. If you're interested in the petition, please click the link below. Fans in the UK have been fussing about the remastered classic series episodes not being released and the DVDs that featured them are now released since 2012. Hopefully the same can be for the American audience of Thomas the Tank Engine:

Railway Mischief came out last year by Wal*Mart with five selected S17 episodes which were given good reception by the fandom, minus one though. Now we have S18 exclusive episodes which are now getting greater reception as well from the Thomas & Friends fandom. Will this exclusive DVD exceed the amount of pleasure then Railway Mischief? Well let's find out.

EPISODES
Like last year, the DVD features five selected episodes from the upcoming 18th season, which will air later this year on television. I won't go in full detail of the episodes as I will leave that when S18 has it television run. But to clarify my views on the episodes I find them to be better then the previous series. This exclusive DVD blew 'Railway Mischief' right out of the water. The writing is good as always and yes there has been one hit and miss but I don't mind it as it's not as bad as the writing from S9-16.

SPECIAL FEATURES
The special features are great as always with their intervals. We have another story time with Mr. Perkins with 'Pop Goes The Diesel' with some minimal additions by Lorraine Marshall. We have 'Calling All Engines!' with Paxton and Salty sharing their bio's of their character for the young generation of Thomas fans to know. We also have Mr. Perkins talking about the Dieselworks via postcard telling us about the diesel engines and that despite they're the future of the railways they can always breakdown.

OVERALL
I bought the DVD on Amazon by a seller from Texas, great delivery service. The episodes are a great selection and special features are fun to watch as well with their intervals. The DVD is in widescreen since the release of 'Spills and Thirlls' in the states by Lionsgate which is more enjoyable to watch then fullscreen.
