S24 Ep.23: Thomas' Animal Friends + Series Overall

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND ARE NOT INFLUENCED FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FANBASE

THOMAS' ANIMAL FRIENDS
Written by
Davey Moore

Directed by
Ian Cherry

Produced by
Tracy Blagdon (Jam Filled)
Ian McCue (HIT/Mattel)

Plot
Thomas is asked to help at the animal park for the day and realises there's more to the job than he first thought.

Air Date
14/07/20 - AUS

I remember when a colouring in page was shown on the official website and once when it had gone on twitter, it was expected from the older Thomas fandom that they would be freaking out going all anti-furry on it because the engines dressed up as animals, even though the target audience dress up as animals too for fun. This was before the episode was released by the way which sadly shows that things can be judged before even seeing it. Although how the engines' act infront of Thomas are like some members of the fandom. TBH I thought this episode would've involve Thomas and his friends dressing up as animals for a party or something but after seeing this episode I think it was nice. It had a nice use of the steam team characters, quite fitting for it to be the last episode for quite some time. I also like how Rebecca treats Thomas well and the use of fantasy sequence was nice with Rebecca thinking up ideas of what animals the engines can be, fits in well with the story, although I wonder why Nia was forgotten? It had a nice moral about sliding the teasing off your back with the engines either laughing or berating him. I think this was a nice episode to end the season with.

SERIES OVERALL

Before I'll give my overall thoughts, I want to say this first, now that the newest season is over, Thomas & Friends' future is now unpredictable at this point since there is a hiatus placed onto the show. SiF had said that there's no S25 in production at the moment, those last three words are important to read, since S24's production had ended in September 2019 and no new season hadn't been greenlit yet. But unlike some people who are spreading misinformation about it being 'cancelled', there's no word on that actually happening, I mean we don't have any official word, yet, from Mattel or from Ian McCue. There have been confirmation about a new book being published by Random House for St.Patricks Day as well as a heritage railroad in the US confirming that they will be holding 'Day Out With Thomas' event in 2021, since this year's Thomas events around the world (excluding Japan and maybe the UK as of July 2020) would've been likely cancelled due to COVID-19. Plus we see Mattel investing into a new approach towards the Thomas toys by them streamlining the products and simplifying it as well and a new marketing team had being placed into the Thomas brand last year as well, plus we are getting three new YouTube short series like those 'Thomas' Birthday Wishes' videos for the 75th anniversary, look those shorts are strange but it's better than having Thomas gone for good whether that is for better or worse, and that Jam Filled had said back in December 2019 that Mattel are looking for a new animation studio, yeah that must've been an interm saying this but I doubt that he/she would just go off from assuming that the show will go on. So I don't see an end in site for the little blue engine and his friends. What would the future be? Well I can't predict anything, I wish I have a magic ball and forsee the future but in reality it's more of a wait and see unlike some who are writing it off as done just because it's not like S20.

However if Mattel decides to sell Thomas to another company, due to low toy sales from 2017, I'm not expecting the likes of Disney to be involved since Disney hadn't been interested in purchasing Thomas when it was being sold in 2012 and that some fans have the idea that Thomas might get the Marvel/Star Wars treatment because of it being a classic franchise or because Walt Disney loved trains, which lets be honest is not a really good excuse IMO since you don't see Disney buying up anything media related that involves trains, I don't see 'The Little Engine That Could' from 1991 or 2011 being on Disney+. To me I see Disney treating Thomas like another pre-school show and it'll be regulated to the Disney Junior channel and the Disney+ streaming service and it's clearly not fair to people who don't have any of those and either rely on DVDs or the internet and the idea of Thomas getting the Marvel/Star Wars treatment is just laughable considering how different they are compare to Thomas. One person said to me that it should get the Winnie the Pooh treatment, which is something problematic to me. Pooh bear had gone through many reboots over the years from the short films in the 1960's, to the 1983 Disney Channel show, to the 1988 - 1991 Saturday morning cartoon, to the 2001 'Book of Pooh' etc.
Plus I have this fear that Disney might dump the UK voice cast in favour of the US cast for whatever reason, kind of like what they did with Pooh Bear over the years which erased its UK roots, I never knew Pooh Bear was British until later on in life.

Plus Disney never uses Pooh bear for anything else outside of movies and TV. We have a ride at the parks, both in the US and one in Japan, but that's just about it and he's often not celebrated as much as the other Disney characters outside of Mickey and Friends, I mean Disney would go for characters that are more profitable like 'Frozen.' Plus you need to look at there other pre-school shows on Disney Junior, some shows are just there and Disney doesn't acknowledged them either, heck even Mickey Mouse, there mascot, is on there too and he's more famous than the shows on their and on par with Thomas. Plus Disney had some failings with other brands that they bought like 'Doug' from Nickelodeon and 'Power Rangers' from Saban Brands.

Another company that fans want is Hasbro and TBH, I just see them as another Mattel, although they have a robust TV scheduling, there main goal is to sell toys and that would involve gimmicks, I don't know why these two are the saving graces? If I were to sell Thomas, I sell it to a company that is financially successful but would love to have something like Thomas in their portfolio, like what HIT Entertainment was before they'd purchased Gullane in 2002.

If anyone from Mattel is reading this, I still see the potential in Thomas for the years to come but I can see a rest is in order so the show can be improved to better probably for investors, hopefully that is the idea. But I also hope there is a balance when it comes to the home entertainment side, particulary in the US. Have it on Netflix but also on DVD and TV for those who aren't so lucky to have that luxury of having a streaming platform right in front of them, let alone it would be better to have the latter two if the contract between Mattel and Netflix can't be negoitaged to be extended.
Speaking of Netflix, now that the show isn't being broadcasted on TV over in the US, I see potential of going back to longer episodes and specials again since Netflix doesn't rely on commericals and time limits like Nickelodeon does or PBS. The longer the stories are the more breathing space there is.

---

Now since I got that out of the way, I'll give my full thoughts on the current series. Despite the low score compare to last season, I think S24 had shaped up to be the best of the BWBAs era. I like how the fantasy sequences were only used when needed, like Emily thinking about being best friends with Edward, Percy thinking about a railway show, Shankar's worry about being in the spotlight, James thinking he's a superhero etc. they all fit in well with the story without it being forced in to tick boxes. It's almost quite similar to how Michael White used it in his stories in the past two seasons. With the ones that don't it just adds more breathing space to tell the story.
I also think it was nice that Edward and Henry had some time to shine and some dialouge and with it being the 75th anniversary of the Railway Series, it was quite fitting. While it may not be big, and how can it be big when it comes to the characters that, according to the production team, were too hard to write for? But big or small it's good that they weren't forgotten anyway.
While mentioning Emily earlier, I feel that despite her getting two episodes this season I feel that she deserves better, this is one of the problems that I have with her character in general in this era. Her current persona, which is quite similar to the one she had in S7, just makes her plain. I appreciate that the writers and production team are trying something with her but I think her S8 persona gave her more of dynamic when it comes to conflict. 'Emily's Adventure' is a fine example of that with her bossy attitude and how her bossiness can cause trouble to the others. I also think her being arrogant is also good to use when it comes to conflict like in 'Excellent Emily' from S12. Her having flaws and conflict in those episodes did make her interesting.

S24 really felt more improved compare to the past two seasons from this era.
Now that the show is on a hiatus, and I hope that Mattel is reading this, I feel like there can be more improvements to the show, that is if they are doing that. For starters, while Thomas was nice to add as the storyteller, perhaps it's time to move away from that. Sure it had been a tradition for the show to use a narrator since the show's inception with Ringo Starr. But plenty of kids shows have gone forth without a narrator these days and it would allow to tell the story more visually, like what the 2018 special did or how 'A Shed For Edward' was when it first aired without a narrator in the UK back in 2017. Removing the segments of Thomas spicing up the story and then telling us the moral of it all with a recap was fine but there had been a repitition of past episodes from past seasons from time to time and I think maybe it's better to give it a rest as it would also allow to give kids the digestion of what the moral life lesson is after they've seen the episode.

I also think, that whatever they think of during the hiatus for the show's future, is that they should have stories away from the steam team. Yes they are the core characters but for years the show has always been about Thomas and his friends. And that includes the ones like Duck, Donald, Douglas etc. while yes they don't offer much in terms of story, it'll be good to see being added for secondary roles be it them playing a role or as a cameo. It offers more variety of engines on the railway instead of repeating the same old ones that kids are already used too. Because I feel showcasing the steam team engines more and more will get rather tiresome for the young audience. Yeah those character don't resonate with children but I believe kids would want variety as well.

If they decide to reboot the series, I hope they don't turn Thomas into something drastic and foreign looking, that's what happened to 'Bob the Builder'. When the new designs were revealed, people didn't like it at all and I can see why. Unlike Thomas and Fireman Sam, Bob didn't have something that's unique or standout compare to the stop-motion version. The former two had gone CG ever since the late 2000's but they had at least kept something that made them distinctive from before.

Maybe what they can do, if it is a reboot, is to retell the Rev.W.Awdry's stories again. That way young kids can be reintroduced to Thomas and maybe the characters, who I had mentioned earlier, that kids had never resonated too might be a good way to introduce them too. I mean if a reboot is in order, I would rather that more than something like the Bob reboot.

Or maybe Mattel might want to improve Big World into something better, there is a gap with Hiro telling Thomas that he should visit Japan one day, come on I really would love to see something like that. Japan has a huge railway culture that is similar to the UK and I would love to see Thomas being treated like a celebrity, I mean Kenji heard of his globe trotting adventures, so I think the people over there in the series would've heard of it too.

Anyway, those are my wishful thinkings. I do hope we see Thomas again soon and not be left on the side gathering dust.

CLEO'S FIRST SNOW
Written by
Becky Overton

Directed by
Ian Cherry

Produced by

Ian McCue (HIT/Mattel)

Plot
Cleo sees snow for the first time and enjoys it. But she would soon learn why to enjoy it while it lasts.

Air Date
13/07/20

I liked Cleo in this episode, she feels just like a child who is new to the world. The whole episodes makes you sympathetic with her when it comes to her enjoying the snow but then it was melting away with serves a good moral that we should enjoy things while it lasts. It makes it very relatable with the things we enjoy like maybe a TV series or book series, we want more and more but they can't always last forever. I also like how Ruth was like a mother to Cleo too. It was a nice episode.

S24 Ep.21: Nia's Bright Idea

NIA'S BRIGHT IDEA
Written by
Camille Ucan &

Directed by

Produced by

Plot
Nia uses what she learns about lighthouses to suggest covering a big wheel in Christmas lights, so that Harold can see where he's going in a storm.

Air Date
12/07/20 - AUS

I thought with this episode and Cleo's snow episode being Christmas themed, ABC Australia would be holding back those two episodes for December as part of their Christmas lineup, like they did with 'Kangaroo Christmas' back in 2018, although I think with S24 airing around June/July it would be a while since December is, as writing this review, nearly five months away. So I was a bit surprised. Anyway with the episode itself, I think it was good that Nia is learning new things about Sodor like a lighthouse but I kinda wish Nia went through some conflict into helping Harold maybe have her go through an idea that wasn't so clever in the end until she came up with a clever one which is using the Earl's giant wheel as a light beacon. I mean, the episode recaped 'Blown Away' as an example of the moral that the episode was giving but Skiff went through conflict which is him feeling belittled by Duck and Oliver, unintentionally of course, for being small. It's just my opinion, I feel that Nia needs to go through some conflict and the elephant episode earlier this season was a good example of that. She's a good character IMO with her cleverness but I feel more is needed to make her well rounded.

S24 Ep.20: Cleo the Road Engine

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND ARE NOT INFLUENCED FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FANBASE

CLEO THE ROAD ENGINE

Written by
Laura Beaumont
& Paul Larson

Directed by
Ian Cherry

Produced by
Tracy Blagdon (Jam Filled)
Ian McCue (HIT/Mattel)

Plot
When Ruth's new car, Cleo, takes to the rails to race Thomas, she soon discovers why she is designed to stick to the roads.

Air Date
10/07/20 - AUS

When IMDB first revealed Cleo, I thought she was going to be a road steam engine hence the title but once Mattel revealed the character on the official website as a colouring in page, it turned out she was an original design by Ruth. Although I don't get how she is suppose to be like a steam engine? I guess it's the headlights looking like buffers, her grille looks a bit like a cowcatcher and her wheels look like steam engine wheels. While her basis does seem odd compare to the real life basis that the characters are based on, I think it's good that they'd made her as an original design since Ruth is an inventor. So it makes sense why she's not based on any actual car.

Anyway, the story gave me a 'Thomas & Bertie' vibe with Thomas and Cleo being cocky about whose the fastest, although I feel that the whole racing theme is getting overused now. It was fine back when they'd reintroduced it in 2013 because we hadn't seen it for so long but now I think it's being overdone, although this isn't a Thomas and Bertie story, the same can be applied to those two. I also think Ruth should've been a bit firm with Cleo about driving on a railway line since it's very dangerous, and you think after Thomas' encounter with Max and Monty in 'Mucking About' when it comes to road vehicles riding on rails that maybe Thomas would've done the same as well for Cleo. Sure Cleo is young and had no idea about the dangers of it all but she was carrying Ruth and would've cost her her life.

Probably one of the best moments from this episode is Thomas' cockiness. I don't when was the last we saw him acting like this in TV series, barring specials, but I think it had captured what he was like back in the early years of the classic series.

I this was an alright episode but I think with some tweaks maybe it could've been better. Oh yeah and Cleo's body turning around, yes it's ridiculous, yes it's unrealistic but I said this time and time again, the show was never ultra-realistic since the fifth season and yet some people are OK with Toby floating on a bridge despite him being a heavy steam tram and had berate fans who enjoy BWBA for these moments. Why does an overrated series like S5 get the free pass for every unrealistic moments but berate BWBA for doing the same idea?

KENJI ON THE RAILS AGAIN

Plot

Air Date
9/07/20 - AUS

I really do like this episode and I think it's because of Hiro having a role after four years, his last appearance was back in S20's 'Letters to Santa', which was just a small role. Just seeing him again brought a big smile to my face as it felt like seeing an old friend again. When I first saw this episode after ABC Australia had aired 'Emily's Best Friend', this episode as well as the others like Cleo for example, were shown on ABC's iview app well before their airing dates. Seeing him going back home to Japan was a bit of a shock as I thought they'd given up on that and just make him a Sodor engine instead because of merchandising. But I was honestly more sad about it than Edward leaving the sheds and I think because while Edward is still on Sodor, just being near his branch line, Hiro is going away to the other side of the world and while it's sad that we have to say goodbye to our friends and family who do the same, we will always be friends near and far no matter what.

As for the episode though, it kinda felt like it was two episodes morphed into one. One half was about Kenji being really useful and the other is about him having the idea of him being alone going home to Japan. I feel that maybe this episode should've been two seperate episodes instead. Maybe have one episode devoted to Kenji wanting to be useful but think being the fastest engine only makes him useful like in Japan but Thomas showed him there are more ways to be useful than being the fastest and then maybe have a second episode devoting to Kenji wanting to go home but was scared of saying goodbye to Thomas and travelling alone. But Kenji soon learnt that while saying goodbye is hard, there might be a day when Thomas would come to Japan, that depends if this hiatus comes to an end soon.

So yeah, while this episode was good perhaps maybe it would've been better to make it this as two seperate episodes. We could've seen more character from Kenji while not bad in this episode I feel he was a bit of a blank slate.

Plot
Gordon and Rebecca do the same work - but they go about it differently. When Rebecca tries to be more like Gordon, it doesn't go well... for Gordon!

Air Date
8/07/20 - AUS

I think the episode was good. While not my favourite Davey Moore script it was still nice with its message that not everyone is the same. Although the plot was suppose to be about Rebecca trying to be like Gordon when really she was going about being herself and dealing with the express her own way. The story was simple and there was really not much else to say, really but it was good still in the end.

S24 Ep.17: Yong Bao and the Tiger

YONG BAO AND THE TIGER
Written by

Plot
Yong Bao tells Thomas the story of how he came to have a magnificent tiger emblem on his tender.

Air Date
7/07/20 - AUS

Back in 2016, China had a specially made video with the release of 'The Great Race' of Yong Bao, since of course he's based on the RM class of China Railways. The short was 2D animated and was shown on the internet, although I don't know what website it was from and it wouldn't be YouTube since China had banned the website in their country. Around that time during the media announcement of the 2016 special we were given a special backstory through the mainstream media about Yong Bao which had peaked alot of interest to older fans, including me, and hope that it becomes an episode someday. Four years had passed and we are finally given an official episode and not only do I find this the best episode of S24 but probably one of the best episodes ever.

The story was strong and Yong Bao's character development was great. He was bullied by the mean engines, as they were called in the credits, for shunting trucks but he grew his confidence after seeing a tiger from the mountains, since tigers are a symbol in Chinese culture of bravery, happiness and power, which was shown from Yong Bao after he'd saved one of the engines who had bullied him.

The visuals in the episode was beautiful as well as Chris Renshaw's music. I was also surprised that Yong Bao had been recasted, even his original voice actor, Dan Hi, was in the episode too as the railway inspector. But although that I'd liked Dan Hi's voice, I do like Chris Lee Kum Hoi's voice for Yong Bao, it was nice. Anyway, this to me was the best episode of the 24th season and I think Ian McCue and David Stoten are a great writing duo. If there ever is a 25th season, I hope we see more from the two again. This was an excellent episode and I don't see anything wrong with the episode.

I just hope that whenever we get a DVD release we get the song 'He's So Brave' released as music video, which accompanied the animated short as well in China.

S24 Ep.16: The Inventor's Spectacular Bridge

THESE ARE SOLEY MY OPINIONS AND ARE NOT INFLUENCED FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FANBASE

THE INVENTOR'S SPECTACULAR BRIDGE
Written by
David Stoten

Directed by
Dianna Basso

Produced by
Tracy Blagdon (Jam Filled)
Ian McCue (HIT/Mattel)

Plot
When the Rickety Old Bridge collapses, trapping Toby and Henrietta on the other side of the ravine, Inventor Ruth is asked to build a new one.

Air Date
6/07/20 - AUS

Honestly, I can see why some people might not like Toby's current persona in this episode. But that is the surface level. When you look at it a closer you can understand why. I mean as ridiculous as the S5 episode was and with S6's 'Toby Had A Little Lamb', although not like S5's episode, you can understand why Toby has a fear of the bridge. It's like the Fat Controller's appearance in Lost Treasure, he may've been hard on Thomas on the surface but when you look at it, he's the controller of the railway and was dealing with many other things alongside. So I'm pretty much OK with Toby's personality in this episode.

As for the episode, yeah this was made to be an obvivous toy commerical since there'll be a set based on this episode. Although why have Thomas on it when Toby could've been better option but I think Thomas sells more in a train set, despite parents having to buy multiple Thomas' all the time. But for some reason it didn't feel like it was ramming down the throat, at least to me. Probably Mattel gave them the idea and David Stoten took a more creative approach at utilising the idea to make an integeral part of the story. I think it was a good move made by him and we'd come a long way from that dreadful shake-shake bridge from the island of misfit engines ten years ago which had a bridge set but was not utilised well in my opinion.

This was a very good episode although I hope we get an episode of Toby overcoming his fear of bridges one day, whenever this hiatus comes to an end.

This is a little nitpick but I feel the old crossing gates on Thomas' branch line really stick out like a sore thumb when there's not much detail to go alongside it like a fence. It was there for plot but that's not my problem, I just think it looks out of place that's all and maybe add some more detail to make it look natural. I do like it message, even though we had heard it in the past but it's still nice, that despite something being old, worn and broken doesn't mean it's useless once its restored and used for something else. And yeah the 'Back to the Future' reference. When I first saw this I was really surprised since I am a fan of the movie series, although I wish Chris Renshaw had added a bit of the movie's theme or in style of it as a tribute, but I was also worried that Thomas was going to shoot out electricity. I don't know how Thomas would produce electricity to create power but I'm not that knowledgeable in that field and also films and TV shows that showcase science aren't often accurate anyway, 'Back to the Future' especially. Anyway this was a simple but enjoyable episode.

SONNY'S SECOND CHANCE

Plot
Sonny is trying to prove himself to be a useful engine so that he can stay working on Sodor, but nobody seems to trust him... nobody apart from Diesel, that is! But can Diesel be trusted?

Air Date
2/07/20

An impressive script I have to say. I liked Sonny in this episode because you can actually feel sorry for him since he was thief in the past, as shown in the 'Marvellous Machineary' special back in May. Sonny wants to prove that he's a trust worthy engine but the others such as Gordon and James didn't think he deserves any kind of forgiveness. I also like how Diesel was taking advantage of him, pretty much him in character and much better than what we got from 'Diesel Do Right' back in 2019. But if I have to give one bit of criticism here, I kinda wish the episode was focused on him more with maybe a reason on why he would take an advantage on Sonny it felt like it came out of nowhere to me but it had a good moral that everyone deserves a second chance, so dispite that little hiccup I think it was a really good episode.

Plot

Air Date

The main problem I had with the episode was Thomas being chummy with Ace. The last time these two had interacted was at the salt flats in the USA in the 'Big World, Big Adventures' movie and Thomas was not happy with Ace after he'd used him for a trick towards Nia for his own selfish needs. I think could've been about Ace trying to say sorry to Thomas but was too proud about doing it until maybe Thomas saved him from something saying that although he wasn't happy with him using him for his selfish need in the past, he can't leave someone in danger. I don't know what episode recap they would choose to represent that but maybe 'Apology Impossible' since the message of that story might be about being too proud to say sorry, even though I'm not a fan of that episode. I think that plot could've been more interesting then Ace trying to get over his fear of wild animals because while it was OK and good to see some gowth in him, he felt unnatural for some reason like it didn't fit with him trying to make the jump. Maybe you could've had him dealing with fear of heights or something, something new to come from him. Overall it was OK but not a great big fan of it. On a side note, I do like it that there were two double decker buses in the episode and in Australia we have double decker buses back in the days when steam engines were once dominating the railways and that there liveries were close to the ones we have in New South Wales. There were even some double deckers in the outback, only... but it was a nice bit of accuracy to see despite them being reskins but it works and made sense.

THOMAS' NOT-SO-LUCKY DAY

Plot
When Thomas has a run of bad luck, he tries everything to get back on track... even if it means following Lorenzo's strange, superstitious advice!

Air Date
1/07/20 - AUS

When I first heard of this episode, I was expecting it to be 'Thomas Makes A Mistake' but set in Italy with him messing up jobs and not telling anyone and got through mishap. But after seeing it, it was really not bad as what I'd expected. It was interesting to learn about how Italy deals with there own way of the supersition with their own lucky charm, like the cornicilo being the equlivant of our horseshoe and how Italy considers the number 13 as lucky number, hence why Friday the 13th, as mentioned by Bepe, was a lucky day, whereas in our culture as well as other places like the US and UK, it's bad luck  and how touching iron is a way to prevent a lousy turn and other things. There are some potential with BWBA when it both comes to education and entertainment at the same time. Yeah there was bird pooping on Thomas, but like the dog peeing scene in 'Thomas' Fuzzy Friend', it was there for a split second. I will admit it has some similarity to 'Percy's Lucky Day' with its message but I think with having Italy's way of dealing with superstitious stuff makes it stand out, plus the plot was far more different compare to the S17 episode.
